When two officers responded to a report of a disturbance in the 5700 block of Overbrook Avenue around 3 p.m., they were met by a man armed with a handheld pickaxe and a hammer, according to police commissioner Danielle Outlaw.
The man, later identified as Koffi Dzima, refused to drop his weapons and began walking towards officers, Outlaw said.
That's when an officer deployed his Taser device, according to police.
The man fell to the ground before he struck the officer in the head with the hammer, Outlaw said.
In response, both officers fired at Dzima, striking him, according to police.
He was rushed to Lankenau Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:29 p.m., Outlaw said.
The officer who deployed the Taser device sustained a gunshot wound to his knee and wound to the head from the hammer strike, police said.
He was being treated at Presbyterian Hospital, according to police.
The second officer was uninjured.
The incident was captured on the officers' body cameras, Outlaw said.
